The first step to becoming an experienced traveler is knowing where you are.

Nowadays, more and more people are into outdoor adventures. Many feel that visiting tourist spots is boring—they’d rather go somewhere off the beaten path, like undeveloped wild mountains or canyons, believing these are the true paradises for adventurers. Little do they know these places also come with huge risks.

Undeveloped areas mean no maps or guides, making it very easy to get lost. There have been frequent news reports of travelers going missing. For example, on October 7, 2017, five hikers were trapped in the Qinling Mountains, lost in a bamboo forest and unable to find their way out. On December 24, 2017, another hiker got lost on a mountain and was stranded for three hours—not only was their physical condition near its limit, but they were also surrounded by loose rock slopes, creating an urgent situation.

In summary, there are four main reasons why hikers get lost: unfamiliar routes, seasonal changes altering the path (e.g., vegetation covering the trail in spring or summer when it was clear in winter), lack of route planning, and overconfidence.

So how can you avoid getting lost?

One of the most frequent challenges in outdoor activities is navigating and orienting yourself correctly to avoid getting lost. Always finding the right direction and route is a fundamental skill every hiker should have. When in the midst of complex mountain terrain, it's easy to lose your bearings—so being able to identify directions promptly becomes especially crucial.

Both experienced hikers and beginners understand the importance of a compass as an essential tool in outdoor activities. It’s the most accurate, quick, and effective instrument for navigation in the wild. However, when using a compass, there are a few things to keep in mind: it should be held level, and don’t place it near magnetic objects to avoid interference.

You can also use a watch to determine direction—the watch must be an analog one. Lay the watch flat and align the hour hand with the sun. The bisector of the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark (an angle less than 180 degrees) will point toward the south.

But these methods still lack precision. To enhance location accuracy, you’ll need a Beidou Box Q09 Gen 2. With its powerful and stable Beidou signal covering the entire country, you’ll have strong connectivity everywhere—even in areas without public networks, it enables satellite short-message communication. It supports storage of one million track points and features a one-touch emergency SOS, ensuring you can enjoy your adventure with both joy and peace of mind.

Enjoying the beauty and thrill of the outdoors is great, but safety should always come first. Wishing all outdoor-loving travelers happy adventures and safe returns home.
