On July 27, 2018, the "Museum Lecture Series: Culture and Tourism in Communities" event, hosted by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, took place in Beijing. Nearly 100 residents from communities such as Jianguoli Community and Xiaozhuang Community signed up to participate. Five museums — the Capital Museum, the Ancient Observatory of the Beijing Planetarium, the Xuanwu Cultural Museum of Beijing, the Great Bell Temple Museum of Ancient Bells, and the Royal Cuisine Museum — jointly participated, offering a rich array of cultural tourism services to community residents.

Five museums join forces Five plus one events bring museums into the community

Five museum-in-community activities, plus a spontaneous museum visit, made up the series of events under the "Museum Lecture Series: Culture and Tourism in Communities."

The "Museum Lecture Series: Culture and Tourism in Communities" series invited five museums to take part: the Capital Museum, the Ancient Observatory of the Beijing Planetarium, the Xuanwu Cultural Museum of Beijing, the Great Bell Temple Museum of Ancient Bells, and the China Royal Cuisine Museum. The first event brought together experts from all five museums to deliver a unique cultural and museum knowledge feast to nearly 100 residents from 40 families in Xiaozhuang and Jianguoli Communities.

An expert from the Xuanwu Cultural Museum of Beijing brought the rich and enduring culture of Xuanwu to life for attendees, vividly recreating the dynamic history of the Changchun Temple.

A guide from the Great Bell Temple Museum of Ancient Bells introduced community residents to the long-standing tradition of ancient Chinese bell culture. From pottery bells and ritual chimes used in Neolithic times for spiritual worship, to bronze musical bells from the pre-Qin period’s ceremonial music system, and then to Buddhist temple bells from the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties onward — the evolution of ancient bells has been both lengthy and intricate. Each bell carries the imprint of history.

A guide from the China Royal Cuisine Museum explained that imperial cuisine represents the essence of culinary culture. It began in the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, developed during the Qin and Han periods, matured in the Tang, Song, and Yuan eras, and reached glorious heights during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The dining etiquette, ingredients, utensils, dishes, and even the imperial eating customs of different periods all embody the principle that “health is gold.” Chinese imperial cuisine reflects the hard work and wisdom of laborers from various eras, regions, and ethnic groups, and stands as a valuable heritage of traditional Chinese culture.

On the day of the event, after their presentation, a teacher from the Ancient Observatory led community residents on a spontaneous visit to the observatory — a true “museum trip on the go.”

Museums in the community help foster cultural prosperity

In recent years, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism has worked to expand the reach of tourism public services, innovate service methods, and improve service quality. It has further refined the tourism public service system and implemented the people-centered concept of “Culture and Tourism in Communities,” bringing cultural tourism into neighborhoods so that residents can enjoy a rich variety of cultural tourism services close to home, and experience the happiness brought by these public services in their daily lives.

The "Museum Lecture Series: Culture and Tourism in Communities" event provided community residents with a museum exhibition window right at their doorstep, allowing them to explore the city’s historical and cultural legacy, gain deeper insight into Beijing’s cultural tourism appeal, and experience the refined, harmonious, open, and ambitious spirit of the new era.
