As someone from Taichung, how could I not share the foods of “Fengjia Night Market” with everyone? But this top-tier, well-known night market in Taiwan has such a fast turnover of small shops—it can be surprisingly quick at times. And perhaps because of that, the creativity in the food here is also the fastest-paced too. It’s the easiest place to find fun and unique snack creations. I’ve finally collected many of the latest, hottest, and most long-lasting 18 must-try foods from “Fengjia Night Market” to share with you all—many of these are from my own notes while searching #FengjiaNightMarket on Instagram as my personal shortlist. Welcome to add them to your trip and enjoy a delicious night market food journey in Taichung!

(1) OVERLORD Steak Cup VS. (2) GENKI JUICE Healthy Juice
Steak Cup.OVERLORD.Healthy Juice.GENKI JUICE: Instagram hot spots. A show-stopping steak cup vs. gradient juices from Anping, Tainan!

GENKI JUICE Healthy Juice: No. 558, Fuxing Rd., West District, Taichung City \ 04 2452 9865 \ 16:30–23:30 \ Facebook Page
We accidentally shot five little shops in one night, starting with these two at either end of Fuxing Rd. The steak cup and healthy juice shops are located at opposite ends of Fuxing Rd. and Wenhua Rd., just about a minute's walk apart. “OVERLORD Steak Cup” is right in front of Earth Village on Fuxing Rd., and “GENKI JUICE Healthy Juice” is next to Tuocheng Shopping Plaza!

(3) Seaside Cottage Dry-Fried Clams VS. (4) Brother Yung’s Egg Waffles
Seaside Cottage Dry-Fried Clams X Brother Yung’s Egg Waffles: The freshest and most delicious dry-fried clams in Fengjia Night Market. A must for clam lovers. Nearby, there are also coin-priced egg waffles at just 10 NT for 5.

In recent years, there have been more and more “dry-fried clams” in Fengjia Night Market. I can’t even count how many stalls there are throughout the whole area—but this “Seaside Cottage Dry-Fried Clams X Brother Yung’s” was discovered on Instagram, and it felt like I’d found it too late. Each clam is super plump. A group of us just stood at the front of the shop, eating them one by one, tossing the shells into the trash can. There’s something very unapologetically Taiwanese about it.

(5) Royal Yuan Fire & Ice Glutinous Balls
Royal Yuan Fire & Ice Glutinous Balls: Fengjia Night Market. Fengjia Foods * Taipei’s traditional handmade yuanxiao (sweet glutinous rice balls) from Tonghua Street have opened a store in Taichung. Osmanthus shaved ice topped with hot glutinous balls—the sweet and cold combo is super satisfying.
Royal Yuan Fire & Ice Glutinous Balls: No. 2, Lane 127, Wenhua Rd., West District, Taichung City \ 0911 881 875 \ 17:00–24:00 \ Facebook Page
The shaved ice also has osmanthus syrup. Eating just the shaved ice lets you enjoy the fragrance of osmanthus, but pairing it with the glutinous balls adds an extra sweetness from the osmanthus syrup. Since this bowl contains a mix of glutinous balls—sesame, peanut, etc.—the chilled ones have a Q-texture where they touch the ice, and the parts not touching the ice are soft and tender. Every bite of filling bursts with flavor. The hot glutinous balls occasionally let their fillings peek out, which is just delightful.

It was my first time tasting a whole bowl full of beef tendons like this — every single piece is about one centimeter wide, perfectly chewy and springy, still attached to bits of beef. Pop the whole thing in your mouth and it’s effortless to chew. The best part? It’s not mushy at all, but just right — you can really bite into the bounce, and it gets more flavorful the more you chew.

Taichung has really been seeing more and more creative food lately, and this place “Fengjia Ice Parlor” is right at the entrance of Feng Chia University. The whole interior is decked out in nostalgic vintage style. Whether it's the location or the gimmick, it's got definite appeal. Plus, with summer in full swing, who doesn’t want to come by in the afternoon for a big bowl of ice — especially when it’s made with fresh fruits. All that fresh fruit is just awesome!

(14) Geki Shichi Yakitori
Very popular open-air izakaya on Wenhua Street in Fengjia Night Market — expect at least a half-hour wait to get in. Delicious street-side barbecue paired with a draft beer? Totally satisfying!

The Baker Rural Kitchen. Weekend brunch: a student favorite. A lane-way brunch spot that's packed on holidays and hard to get a seat at!
No. 7, Lane 28, Alley 20, Fengjia Road, Taichung City \ 04 2452 5759 \ facebook
Take, for example, my friend’s classic 4oz steak brunch. On the white ceramic plate was a French toast made by cutting it in half and dipping it in egg wash—my friend absolutely loves French toast and always gravitates toward it whenever she sees it. Plus, she’s also a big fan of steak, so having this combo for breakfast meant I already knew she’d love it. When the dish arrived, she said the breakfast here may look simple, but it makes you want to come back again and again on weekends. I think that’s a wonderful compliment.
