If you’re traveling and someone around you gets carsick, it’s very inconvenient—watching them vomit and turn pale can be really distressing.
Medically speaking, carsickness, seasickness, and airsickness are all categorized as motion sickness. Here, Tiantian introduces seven remedies for you, hoping they’ll help those who suffer from motion sickness.
1. Fresh ginger

During the trip, hold fresh ginger slices in your hand and sniff them whenever possible to inhale the pungent aroma. You can also stick the ginger slices on your navel and secure them with a pain-relief plaster.
2. Orange peel
About an hour before the trip, fold a fresh orange peel outward, then inward, and squeeze it between your fingers aimed at both nostrils—the peel will spray out fragrant oil mist. Inhale it over 10 times, and continue doing so during the trip as needed.
3. Vinegar
Drink a cup of warm water with vinegar added before the trip, and you won’t get carsick along the way.
4. Pressing the Neiguan point
When motion sickness occurs, use your thumb to press the Neiguan point (located on the palmar side of the wrist, about two finger-widths above the wrist crease, between the two tendons).
5. Pickled mustard tuber
According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, Li Shizhen described pickled mustard tuber as “warm in nature, with the effect of ventilating the lungs and resolving phlegm, which can regulate the diaphragm and soothe qi.” This is the main reason why it can stimulate appetite and alleviate stomach discomfort during motion sickness. Pickled mustard tuber can also relieve headaches, relieve qi stagnation, improve vision, benefit the nine orifices, and ease dizziness. “Motion sickness is mainly caused by dysfunction of the inner ear’s vestibular system, and pickled mustard tuber can clear the nine orifices and harmonize the imbalance in the inner ear, stopping motion sickness at its source.”
6. Olives and lemons
The early stage of motion sickness causes excessive saliva production, which drips into your stomach and induces nausea. The tannic acid in olives and lemons can dry out your mouth. Therefore, eating an olive at the first sign of nausea can help eliminate the queasy feeling.
7. Soda crackers
While this won’t stop saliva secretion, soda crackers can absorb excess fluid in your stomach once they reach there. The secret ingredients are sodium bicarbonate and tartaric acid.
