Outdoor Sports
When you're out for outdoor activities and suddenly twist your ankle, it can really ruin your mood. Here are 5 steps for emergency treatment to help you handle such situations. When to see a doctor: If there is obvious swelling within 30 minutes after the injury, or if the swelling does not improve after 48 hours of home treatment, you should go to the hospital.
Step 1: Rest
Stop walking immediately and find a stable place to sit down as soon as possible. If you can find something to use as a makeshift crutch, lean on it for support for at least 24 to 48 hours. Do not put weight on the injured ankle.
Step 2: Cold Compress
Cold compress helps constrict blood vessels, reduce bleeding, control the progression of the injury, and serves to stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. Within the first 48 hours, you can apply an ice pack or cold towel for 10 minutes every hour. Remember to place a damp cloth between your skin and the cold compress, and monitor the local skin color—stop using it immediately if the skin turns purple or numb.
Heat Compress: Do not use heat compress right after the injury to avoid dilating blood vessels and increasing bleeding. When the pain and swelling stabilize, and the injured foot doesn’t feel overly swollen when lowered, and the skin temperature returns to normal—usually after 48 hours when bleeding has stopped—you can use heat compress to help disperse bruises.
Step 3: Elevate the Injured Foot
When sitting or lying down to rest, use a pillow or backpack to elevate the injured foot. This promotes venous return and accelerates blood and lymph circulation, preventing it from pooling in the damaged blood vessels, thus reducing local swelling and pain.
Step 4: Medication
Hemostasis → Immediately after the injury, you can spray “Haodekuai” on the affected area and take Yunnan Baiyao capsules.
Pain Relief → Take aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, or ketoprofen to help alleviate inflammation or pain.
Blood Circulation & Bruise Dispersion → After 48
hours, when the bleeding has stopped and the swelling has stabilized, you can apply external ointments like Wu Hu Dan, or take internal medications such as Huo Xue Zhi Tong San to disperse bruises. You may also try some natural remedies, such as soaking the injured area in water boiled with Sichuan pepper, ginger, and salt.
