Outdoor activities are enjoyable for both body and mind, but German experts remind people to pay attention to eye health during outdoor activities. Even on cloudy days, precautions should be taken against ultraviolet exposure.
Ultraviolet rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths ranging from 10 to 400 nanometers, which are invisible to the human eye, but excessive exposure can damage the eyes. The German Association for Better Vision warns that even on cloudy summer days, people should not forget to protect their sensitive eyes, as some UV rays can still penetrate cloud cover and reach the ground. Prolonged exposure to these rays can cause significant harm.
The association also states that reflected light from water surfaces poses additional risks, so those who spend extended periods near water should take extra care to protect their eyes. Symptoms of excessive UV exposure may include redness, tearing, and eye muscle tension. In such cases, it’s advisable to reduce sun exposure and, if necessary, wear sunglasses with UV protection.
Additionally, aside from water and sand, shiny paper used in newspapers and books can also reflect light and harm the eyes, particularly for children and those with cataracts.
