The sequel to Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days reignites the fantasy film craze with its Final Judgment

The Korean film Along with the Gods was released in Taiwan at the end of 2017 and quickly sparked widespread discussion. It ultimately grossed nearly NT$490 million nationwide, not only becoming the highest-grossing Korean film in Taiwan’s box office history but also ranking as the second-highest-grossing Korean film in Korea, which also made its upcoming sequel, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, set to be released in Taiwan on August 8, a major sensation even before its premiere, drawing global attention.

Along with the Gods explores the theme of reincarnation, combining a stellar cast of accomplished actors, epic fantasy settings, Hollywood-level stunning visual effects, thrilling action sequences, and an emotionally moving storyline. The film ultimately attracted over 14.4 million viewers locally. Furthermore, the movie achieved consecutive box office successes in Hong Kong, North America, Australia, Vietnam, and other countries, fully showcasing the exceptional charm of Korean cinema.

This film is adapted from the webtoon written by writer Joo Ho-min, depicting the journey through the afterlife. It deeply resonates with readers about the stability of karma and explores the ambiguous boundary between humans and the divine. The series gained immense popularity among readers and, after its launch on WEBTOON, accumulated over 100 million views. Its physical publication sold over 450,000 copies and also received multiple awards in the Korean comic industry, such as the Bucheon International Comics Awards and the Korea Comic Awards – Presidential Award, earning high acclaim in the comic world.

Now adapted into a movie, the production team spent six years preparing and filming, with a budget of 40 billion KRW (approximately NT$1.08 billion). Filming took place at more than 150 locations, including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Busan, Anseong, Pyeongchang, Pyeongtaek, and Iksan. In addition, the film enlisted Dexter Studios, Korea’s leading special effects company, which previously worked on films such as Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings and The Taking of Tiger Mountain, to vividly recreate the various hellish scenes from the comics on the big screen.

Director Kim Yong-hwa stated that Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days can be considered the starting point of the Along with the Gods series. To connect the two films and make better use of the film’s background, the challenging decision was made to shoot both parts simultaneously. In particular, the first part had to establish the overarching worldview that runs through the story and develop the unique characteristics of each character so that audiences could more easily grasp the messages conveyed in the second part. As a result, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days will deliver even more intricate emotional depth and a richer narrative. Many of the story threads planted in the first part will come together like pieces of a puzzle in the sequel. If the first film focused on the seven trials of the deceased Kim Ja-hong, guided by his guardian angel, this installment will take the story further, unfolding a grand narrative set against the backdrop of the realms of the living and the dead, the present and the past. As the plot develops across these two realms, the hidden pasts of the three grim reapers will gradually be revealed, along with the thousand-year-old bonds that tie them together and the personal mysteries they must confront—offering audiences fresh excitement and emotion.
