Typhoon Maria's storm circle is moving away, but heavy rain and high temperature warnings remain in effect — stay alert

According to the latest information, the center of Typhoon No. 8 made landfall from Fujian into mainland China around 9:00 AM today. Over the past three hours, its intensity has weakened and the storm circle has slightly contracted. The center is now over land to the northwest of Matsu and continues to move northwestward. Matsu is still experiencing wind and rain, while Changhua, Taichung, Nantou, as well as Yilan and Hualien have already exited the storm circle. The typhoon is expected to continue weakening in intensity, with the storm circle likely to further shrink.

Due to the subsidence effect of the typhoon circulation, temperatures have risen across various regions today, especially in Hualien and Taitung where high temperature orange or yellow alerts are in place, with a chance of consecutive days reaching up to 36°C.

Before the storm circle completely moves out, New Taipei, Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, and Matsu remain in the alert zone and should stay vigilant against strong winds and heavy rain. Over 10,000 households in New Taipei and Taoyuan are still without power and awaiting restoration.

The Central Weather Bureau continues to issue heavy rain warnings for several northern counties and cities. Heavy to extremely heavy rain has already occurred in the mountainous areas of Taipei, the mountainous areas of New Taipei, the mountainous areas of Taoyuan, the mountainous areas of Hsinchu County, the mountainous areas of Miaoli County, the mountainous areas of Taichung, and the mountainous areas of Yilan. Today, there is also a chance of localized heavy rain in Matsu, areas north of Taichung, Yilan, Hualien, and mountainous areas south of Yunlin and in Nantou. Those planning to go hiking, trekking, or camping in these areas are advised not to proceed without caution.
