Typhoon Maria intensifies rapidly; marine and land warnings likely to be issued starting Monday

Typhoon Maria is currently located 1,660 km east of Eluanbi, moving northwest at a speed of 27 km/h, which is gradually increasing. The maximum wind speed near its center is 55 meters per second (approximately 198 km/h). It is forecast that by 20:00 on July 9, the typhoon’s center will be positioned 1,020 km east of Eluanbi.

The Central Weather Bureau has lifted the heavy rain advisory. On Monday, July 9, the weather across Taiwan is expected to be sunny to partly cloudy. Since Typhoon Maria poses a threat to northern Taiwan, many are beginning to wonder if there will be a typhoon day off. Regarding this, a decision will be made after the Central Weather Bureau issues a land warning and a video conference is held between the bureau and local county/city mayors at 7 PM the evening before the typhoon makes landfall. The final call on whether to declare a typhoon day will be made by the county/city governments and their teams.

The Taipei City Government decided in March 2018 that full-day or morning typhoon days will be announced by 10 PM the night before or by 4:30 AM on the day itself. If the typhoon day is in the afternoon, the announcement will be made by 10:30 AM. As the typhoon is expected to affect northern Taiwan, those planning to travel abroad should pay close attention to flight schedules and operations.
