Fuel rods shipped back to the U.S.! Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 transforms into green energy thermal power park

The transformation of Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 has drawn much public attention. The power plant is located in Gongliao District, New Taipei City, and is built and operated by Taiwan Power Company. It has now been completed and passed safety inspections, entering a sealed storage state. On March 15, 2018, Taiwan Power announced that it plans to transport the existing 1,744 bundles of fuel rods out of the facility over the next three years in eight batches, with all expected to be removed by the end of 2020.

The first batch of fuel rods from Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 was quietly transported out of the plant area in the early hours of July 4, en route to the United States, signifying that the currently sealed Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 will definitely not be put into operation and is officially becoming history. Taiwan Power also stated that the plant will be transformed into a comprehensive power station primarily focused on thermal and renewable energy in the future.

The Longmen Nuclear Power Plant under the Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 project was proposed in 1980. After 38 years, it has been surrounded by continuous controversy. Now, Taiwan Power has announced that the fuel rods of Nuclear Power Plant No. 4 will be shipped out of Taiwan, with nuclear decommissioning set to begin in December. As for the transformation plan, however, no exact timetable has yet been released and a final decision still needs to be discussed and made.
