The annual Shilin Official Residence Chrysanthemum Exhibition is here once again. To align with the Universiade, this year’s theme is “Famous as Chrysanthemums.” Using exquisite gardening techniques, it showcases various thrilling sporting events, generating excitement for the Universiade. Moreover, since “chrysanthemum” (菊) sounds similar to “lift” (举), “weightlifting” becomes a symbolic highlight of this exhibition. With ten major exhibition zones created from thousands of chrysanthemums of all kinds, and the integration of themes combining strength and beauty inspired by the Universiade, this year’s exhibition offers even more visual appeal.

The Shilin Official Residence Chrysanthemum Exhibition was first held by the Horticulture Experiment Station in the 1940s, mainly to celebrate Chiang Kai-shek’s birthday. It resumed in the fall of 2002 and is typically held around mid-November each year. To boost Taipei’s tourism and promote green awareness, the exhibition has grown more elaborate over the years. Featuring a variety of chrysanthemum types such as large-flower chrysanthemums, artistic-shaped chrysanthemums, cliff-hanging chrysanthemums, tall chrysanthemums, and potted chrysanthemums, along with different themed displays each year, it has become a wonderful destination for family outings and flower appreciation.

This year’s exhibition theme, “Famous as Chrysanthemums,” is in support of next year’s Universiade. What makes this exhibition particularly special is the omnipresence of the Universiade mascot, Brownie the Bear, constructed entirely from flowers and plants. Various sports events are also depicted throughout the park, including taekwondo, fencing, baseball, gymnastics, and more, all becoming popular photo spots. At the entrance to the exhibition zone, there is even a barbell for visitors to lift and take pictures with, echoing the theme. In the center of the exhibition area stands a dragon lifting a barbell, adding both fun and creativity.

In addition to static displays, the exhibition also features music, dance, and cultural art activities, offering great diversity.
