A Snowflake-Like Spectacle on the River: The Dreamy Blossoms of Spike Primrose in Yilan

Recently, a snowflake-like spectacle has appeared on the rivers of Wujiajie Wetland in Wujie Township, Yilan, captivating many visitors who have rushed to capture the moment with their cameras. In fact, these "snowflakes" are the summer blooms of the spike primrose, also known as water caltrop, which are currently in full bloom.

Wujiajie Wetland is located on the east side of the Dongshan River in Lize Village and Xiufu Village, Wujie Township, covering an area of nearly 200 hectares. Due to its low-lying terrain and year-round water accumulation, this unique ecological environment has formed vast grass marshes. The wetland is planted with water caltrop and buttonbush as boundary markers, attracting many visitors every year when the flowers are in bloom.

Also known as water caltrop, the spike primrose gets its name because its fruit resembles the legs of a Go game board. Beyond its unique name, its growth pattern is even more special—its flowers only gradually unfurl in the evening, reaching full bloom by midnight, and then the stamens and petals wither and fall by the next morning, making it a fleeting, dreamlike flower.

The spike primrose is a native coastal plant of Taiwan. In Wujiajie Wetland, Wujie Township, Yilan, it bursts into vibrant bloom every mid-summer. Currently, many local eco-tours are offered in sync with the flowering season. Nature lovers, take advantage of the holidays to visit and experience it firsthand.
