Yilan’s Version of Brown Sugar Avenue Also Features Hot Air Balloon Day Views of Rice Waves and Night Light Shows

Located in the Sanqi Rice Field area of Dongshan Township, Yilan County, the rice paddies turn into emerald green waves in May each year and golden fields in June when the ears mature, earning it the nickname “Yilan’s Version of Brown Sugar Avenue.” This year, to coincide with the rice growth cycle, the area has also launched a “Hot Air Balloon Carnival” event, adding a new highlight for fun.

This year, Dongshan Township Office has broken from tradition by introducing hot air balloon activities, allowing visitors making a pilgrimage to the area to do more than just stroll through the paddies. Not only can they take hot air balloon rides during the day to overlook the golden waves, but there are also evening hot air balloon light shows, bringing a brand-new highlight to tourism.

The “Yilan Hot Air Balloon Carnival” event launched by the Dongshan Township Office this year will be held on June 2, 3, 16, and 17 — a total of four days featuring eight tethered hot air balloon flights. Visitors can not only watch the balloons slowly ascend over the rice fields but also take flights to enjoy aerial views capturing the vast expanses of the paddies.

This year’s tethered hot air balloon events are divided into morning and evening sessions. Morning sessions run from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM, with registration opening at 5:00 AM on the day. Evening sessions are from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, with registration starting at 3:30 PM. Each session accommodates 140 participants, with a fee of NT$500, and all sign-ups are on-site.

In addition to the tethered balloon activities, there will also be four hot air balloon light shows in the evening. As the balloons rise among the rice waves, synchronized lighting and sound effects create an unforgettable visual feast. The light show performances run from 6:45 PM to 7:00 PM and are highly anticipated.
