June is the blooming season for hydrangeas in Japan, when the flowers burst open like colorful orbs, creating a lush and spectacular sea of blossoms that’s a must-see summer spectacle. Here’s a list of five renowned hydrangea spots in Kansai, including the well-known Fumindo Forest and Muryoju Temple in Osaka and Kyoto, as well as many other worthwhile destinations.

1. Kyoto – Kannonji Temple in Fukuchiyama
Located in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto, Kannonji Temple is the oldest hydrangea temple in Kansai. The temple grounds are home to about 10,000 hydrangea plants, with various colors visible around the Nio Gate at the entrance, and even more blooming throughout the garden. Along with Muryoju Temple, it’s one of Kyoto’s top hydrangea destinations.

2. Osaka – Kachō-ji Temple
Located in Minoo City, Osaka, Kachō-ji Temple is famous for prayers for victory. Back in Japan’s Heian period, it helped Emperor Seiwa pray for recovery from illness. Spanning a vast 80,000 tsubo, the temple grounds are planted with as many as 3,600 hydrangea plants of various species, making it not only a noted hydrangea spot but also a renowned place for autumn leaf viewing.
