Convenience stores can also be fitness hubs: FamilyMart transforms outlets into gyms

Convenience stores are not only adopting distinctive designs, but also broadening their facilities and services. In Japan, FamilyMart has teamed up with the fitness chain Fit & GO to create a 24-hour exercise space, turning convenience stores into more than just places for shopping and food—they’re now fitness destinations too.

This FamilyMart outlet with an integrated gym is located in Ota Ward, Tokyo. The first floor houses the convenience store, while the second floor is the “Fit & Go” fitness center, open 24 hours a day and equipped with shower facilities. The second-floor gym spans about 70 tsubo (approximately 231 square meters) and includes over 20 types of complete fitness equipment such as treadmills and dumbbells.

As a result, the first-floor convenience store area has also incorporated a sports section, selling items such as athletic sweatshirts, towels, and high-protein drinks, catering to fitness enthusiasts. FamilyMart is also planning to install coin-operated self-service washing machines in 500 of its Japanese outlets in the near future, offering customers even more diverse services.
