From now until May 21, Shilin Official Residence Park is hosting the “Shilin Official Residence Orchid Exhibition” at the New Orchid Pavilion. This exhibition features over 30 varieties and more than 500 plants of Oncidium orchids in various colors, spots, and shapes.

The Taichung City Government has arranged key flowers produced by local growers in the Horticultural Exhibition Hall.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the Taichung City Government also promotes the “2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition” in the Horticultural Exhibition Hall, showcasing Oncidium orchids, lilies, anthuriums, star of Bethlehem, and gayfeathers (spike gayfeather) produced by central Taiwan growers, allowing visitors to appreciate the diverse beauty of Oncidium orchids.
The uniquely structured “Butterfly-shaped Oncidium.”
Oncidium orchids are native to tropical regions of the Americas such as Mexico, Bolivia, and Brazil. They are epiphytic orchids featuring pseudobulbs that are oval, spindle-shaped, round, or flat-round—organs used for storing and supplying nutrients. These pseudobulbs grow larger during vegetative growth and shrink during reproductive growth. Their flowers resemble ladies in fluffy dancing skirts swaying in the wind, hence the nickname “dancing lady orchid.”

In addition to common yellow-flowered Oncidium varieties, this year’s New Orchid Pavilion exhibition also showcases rarer cultivars. For instance, the “Butterfly-shaped Oncidium” has an unusually structured flower that resembles a large moth with three antennae. The “Panda” variety features a black lip that sparkles like a panda’s eyes.
