Recently, there has been a continuous wave of price hikes. In February this year, a well-known chain bubble tea brand, a must-drink for overseas tourists visiting Taiwan, announced a price increase. A newly opened fast food brand, which quickly rose to fame, also followed suit and adjusted its prices. The successive rounds of price hikes have sparked reactions and discussions among netizens. Now, Taiwan’s famous street food, chicken cutlets, has also revealed plans for a price increase, leading many online to exclaim, “It’s become too expensive to eat.”

Crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, chicken cutlets are one of the must-try foods for Japanese and Korean tourists visiting Taiwan. However, with chicken prices rising this year, the chicken cutlet market has also been affected, leading to price increases. Initially, a piece of chicken cutlet cost only 30 or 35 NT dollars, but now the price has surged to 80 NT dollars per piece—an astonishing increase, with the price even reaching that of a full meal.

The thick-cut, juicy chicken cutlets operated by celebrity NONO are among the favorite dishes on many foodies’ lists, and the business is doing very well. However, recently, prices have also been adjusted due to rising raw material costs, increasing from 70 NT dollars to 75 NT dollars per piece. The well-known chain fried chicken brand, Pik Chicken, has also raised its prices amid the price hike trend, from 60 NT dollars to 65 NT dollars. Devil Fried Chicken has made an even more startling jump, raising its price by 10 NT dollars, with each piece now costing 80 NT dollars.

After the news of the price hikes was released, some netizens said they can’t afford to eat it anymore and would switch to eating boxed meals; others expressed nostalgia for the prices of the old days, sparking intense discussions online.
