2018 Taiwan Design Expo: Discovering the Vitality of Creative Culture and Lifestyle

The annual highlight of the creative culture scene, the "2018 Taiwan Design Expo," this year centers around the theme of "Design Thinking" and is being held grandly from now until April 22.

Since the rise of the Industrial Revolution, the emergence of expos has been closely linked to the background of urban development. Society has a strong need to construct or share a collective consciousness among its people. A thought-provoking design expo is no longer limited to the simple trade of cultural and creative goods, but rather stimulates our conventional and established understanding of the world. Through the setup of specific spaces and conditions, it allows our bodies and minds to be inspired as we experience it.

The 2018 Design Expo pioneered a new concept in cultural exhibition zones. Within this year’s curatorial theme, it takes a step further from the prevailing societal discourse on design—“how design can improve life”—to explore “the possibilities of design creation within the path of cultural thinking.” The significant topic of the “body” becomes a central declaration that runs through the entire exhibition space.

The exhibition begins with the self-awareness of the body, returning to the essence of human basic senses to seek clues for creativity. Through the enveloping themes of the exhibition zones, it explores the concept of “proprioception,” an internal sense of bodily awareness, and reconsiders originality, aesthetics, and culture. Proprioception provides the “knowledge” within the body, and through exhibition layouts such as body/nature, body/vision, body/rhythm, body/craft, body/fashion, and body/society, it brings cultural experience back to a sensory level.
