Another hidden paradise rivals the ethereal beauty of Yunshan Water — a stunning lakeside wonderland like a world apart

Known as the "Land of a Thousand Ponds," Taoyuan boasts not only scenic reservoirs but also many hidden lake treasures waiting to be explored. Houchi Lake in Daxi District, once restricted by military authorities, has long been shrouded in mystery, but has now been opened to the public after the ban was lifted.

Originally a small lake where General Chiang Kai-shek and his wife took walks and went boating, Houchi Lake’s park trail begins at the side entrance of Cihu, crosses a small hill, and stretches about 2 kilometers. The scenic path along the way is captivating, and remnants from the martial law period such as command posts, bunkers, iron gates, and offices offer significant historical insight.

The city government reopened the area to visitors in 2009, preserving the original appearance of five official residences. It showcases Houchi Lake’s history, ecology, and the cultural life of the Chiang family, and has also restored the Chiang family's living spaces.

The park is rich in ecology, including human-faced spiders, birds, and frogs, and has a forest bathing trail lined with Taiwan’s endemic Hinoki cypress trees. Strolling along the trail and admiring the reflections on Houchi Lake allows you to enjoy the same leisure activities once reserved for national leaders.
