Although this year’s Winter Solstice isn’t as cold as usual, you still might want to enjoy some tangyuan to mark the occasion – so head to these two adorable dessert shops. Located in Pingtung, “Sunny Day Café,” and in Hsinchu, “Translucent Cotton,” are the students’ favorites. At just an ultra-affordable NT$30, having a little get-together and chatting here is the best winter little joy.

Sunny Day Café is an all-year-round ice cream shop. While its popular summer items like bubble tea and snowflake ice are top sellers, its winter offerings such as hot tangyuan and grass jelly are also customer favorites. The most special is the winter-limited hot red bean soup, which comes served in a mini Ta Tung electric pot. When it’s brought to your table, it feels super heartwarming. “Sunny Day Café” is right at the entrance of Pingtung University of Science and Technology, so nearby students are surely familiar with it. Using a mini electric pot instead of a regular bowl, when you lift the lid, it’s filled with steaming hot red bean tangyuan – so cute and only NT$30. Add a black sesame tangyuan, and it becomes the most healing Winter Solstice dessert.

Translucent Cotton is a warm and cute dessert shop with a Japanese-style vibe. The whole store exudes a natural ambiance, just like its name. Homemade Job’s tears and red bean tangyuan are their signatures. In summer, the Job’s tears ice cools and beautifies, while in winter, the hot Job’s tears soup warms the heart – there are delicious offerings in every season. Their signature mung bean and garlic dessert is also unforgettable for regulars. On a Winter Solstice that’s not too cold, you can order a bowl of premium Shizuoka matcha ice cream with Job’s tears, accompanied by red bean matcha and white jade balls – a festive touch of tangyuan.
