Following the release of the Taipei Michelin Guide, often regarded as the bible of the culinary world, the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants—dubbed the "Oscars of the food industry"—were unveiled in Macau. Numerous highly ranked and much-talked-about restaurateurs attended despite their busy schedules, and Taiwan was represented by three restaurants at the event: RAW and MUME in Taipei, and L’Atelier by Le Mout in Taichung.

The three Taiwanese restaurants on the list each offer a distinct style. RAW emphasizes expressing Taiwanese flavors through French culinary techniques, MUME showcases Nordic cuisine using over 90% locally sourced Taiwanese ingredients, while L’Atelier by Le Mout focuses primarily on French cuisine. Both RAW and MUME have just been awarded one Michelin star. Additionally, another association, The Diners Club, will present its 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award to renowned Taiwanese chef André Chiang.

Taichung’s L’Atelier by Le Mout has been listed in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for four consecutive years. Its leading chef, Peggy Chen, was the first Taiwanese to be named Best Female Chef of the Year at the award in 2014, and the restaurant was also the first from Taiwan to make the list. The announcement of its closure after a decade in December this year has shocked many.

Meanwhile, MUME, also a one-Michelin-starred restaurant, made its first appearance on the list in 2017 and is expected to climb higher in rankings this year, making it one of the most talked-about restaurants in recent years.
