Travelers planning a trip to Boracay, the honeymoon paradise in the Philippines, might want to act quickly. To restore the island's natural environment, Philippine government officials have recently proposed a "closure" plan, which could be implemented as early as April, with the closure possibly lasting a full year.

With Boracay's rising fame, tourist numbers have exploded. In 2017, the island welcomed over 2 million visitors, making tourism its primary source of income. Alongside tourists, many outsiders have also moved to the island seeking livelihoods, leading to an environment that has struggled to cope over the years. Not only is waste pollution severe, but the increased population has also caused traffic congestion in the narrow streets, and even precious natural resources such as coral reefs are gradually being damaged.

With numerous tourism businesses operating on Boracay, an island closure would inevitably have a major impact. Many travelers who have already booked flights, accommodations, and itineraries may face changes. Although the Philippine government has not announced a specific closure date, those planning to visit Boracay should act fast to avoid missing out.
