Earthquake strikes Taiwan’s Chiayi – a magnitude 5.2 tremor felt across the island

At 17:22 on March 20, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Dapu Township in Chiayi County. The quake was felt across the western half of southern Miaoli and parts of Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu. The quake registered as magnitude 5 in Chiayi and Tainan, magnitude 3 to 4 in Yunlin and Kaohsiung, magnitude 2 in Changhua, Yunlin, and Nantou, and magnitude 1 in Miaoli and Taichung.

Currently, there have been no reports of disasters in Chiayi or Tainan. Regarding transportation, the High-Speed Rail experienced delays on some trains between the Taichung Station and Zuoying Station sections due to the quake; on the Taiwan Railways, the section between Douliu and Shanhua responded under Level 4 protocols, and railway maintenance and electrical units were dispatched to inspect the tracks and overhead lines.
