Taiwan, surrounded by ocean on all sides, boasts spectacular maritime landscapes. But beyond its island charm, its unique geographical location along the Pacific Ring of Fire and its climate have nurtured rich forest resources. Here's a guide to some must-visit forest recreation areas around Taiwan, each with its own unique features such as sea of clouds viewing, flower appreciation, and firefly watching. They’re perfect for visitors planning a phytoncide-filled getaway during holidays.
 
1. Guanwu Forest Recreation Area
Guanwu is located at the border between Wufeng Township in Hsinchu County and Tai’an Township in Miaoli County. The area is often shrouded in sea of clouds and mist, earning it the nickname “Home of Clouds.” Along the way, you’ll be treated to enchanting scenery and breathtaking views of the drifting sea of clouds, which appear and disappear in the distance, showcasing the grandeur of nature.

The Guanwu recreational area sits at an altitude of about 1,800 meters and serves as the best starting point and essential stop for viewing Mount Dabajian. It features multiple forest trails and is home to many endemic or endangered plant and animal species found only in Taiwan.

2. Baxianshan National Forest Recreation Area
Nestled in Taichung, Baxianshan Forest Recreation Area is covered in lush forests and enjoys a cool, refreshing climate. The area is where the Shihwen River and Jiabao River converge. These streams originate from deep within the mountain forests and offer crystal-clear waters. The park is rich in natural ecological resources and was one of Taiwan’s three major logging areas during the Japanese colonial period, offering a strong forestry cultural atmosphere. Today, representative vegetation in the Baxianshan area includes Pinus massoniana, Taiwan red cypress, Calocedrus formosana, Chinese fir, and Fagaceae plants.

3. Alishan National Forest Recreation Area
The famous Alishan Forest Scenic Area not only allows you to admire century-old sacred trees, but also offers stunning flower seas in every season, including cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring. Traveling through the area on the Alishan Forest Railway is a truly relaxing experience.
