The whole world becomes one giant carnival; the Venice Carnival, one of the world’s top three carnivals, is the cream of the crop. With the charm of Italy’s water city and the joyful atmosphere of the mask festival, the annual Venice Carnival invites you to celebrate together!

Why do people wear masks? Beneath each mask lies a different face and a different life. In medieval Europe, where class consciousness was strong, wearing a mask allowed people to temporarily set aside the divide between nobility and commoners, indulging in carefree revelry during the carnival. To truly blend into the carnival, don’t forget to wear the coolest mask possible—you’ll surely catch everyone’s eye!

The word “Carnival” comes from the Latin “carne vale,” meaning “farewell to meat.” It refers to the ten days leading up to the Christian season of Lent, a period of fasting. Since Lent is a time of austerity, believers designated the ten days beforehand as Carnival—a time for unrestrained celebration.

The Venice Carnival is not just a wild party—it’s also a tradition steeped in history. Many participants dress up in elaborate costumes and wear masks, performing throughout the carnival and making it feel as though you’ve traveled back in time.

St. Mark’s Square is the heart of Venice and the liveliest spot during the carnival. It seems as if all the festival-goers have gathered here. Take a look—they look like characters straight out of a storybook, with classic attire given modern creative twists. Everyone competes to stand out during the carnival, while the Renaissance buildings surrounding the square provide the perfect picturesque backdrop, full of vintage charm.

Venice has 177 canals and 118 islands, connected by as many as 400 bridges. To explore this city of water, be sure to take a gondola ride. Wearing your mask and fancy attire, glide through the waterways large and small, discovering every corner of Venice and experiencing the many faces of the city during the carnival. The Rialto Bridge, one of the three bridges spanning the Grand Canal and the oldest of them all, is built in the Renaissance style and is also known as the “White Elephant”—it’s an absolute must-see.
