A Symphony of Spring. Part 1 of the Hanami Series～Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom!

If blooming flowers are the symphony of spring, then cherry blossoms herald the overture of hanami season. With the notes of falling petals, stroll through Japan at a light-hearted pace—traditional charm fills the air with melodies that tug at your heartstrings.

Castles are traditional structures rich in Japanese history. Built over 400 years ago, Yodo Castle has stood since its establishment and is a designated cultural property. Its elegant white exterior is set off by the surrounding scenery, exuding an aura of nobility and earning the nickname "the White Heron Castle."

Over 1,000 cherry blossom trees grow within Yodo Castle, including weeping cherries, Somei Yoshino, mountain cherries, and Oshima cherries. They bloom sequentially from early to mid-April each year, their pale pink hues adding a romantic splash of color to the snow-white fortress, fully embodying the spirit of spring.

Located in Osaka City, Osaka Castle Park transforms into a sea of pink from late March to late April as Somei Yoshino cherry trees burst into bloom. The park attracts not only locals but also many international visitors eager to witness this seasonal spectacle. Even at night, hanami enthusiasts flock to admire the illuminated cherry blossoms. Nearby hanami spots include the Mint Bureau and Expo '70 Commemorative Park.

Tokyo takes on a uniquely enchanting charm in spring. The soft pink of cherry blossoms infuses the city with the essence of the season. Flower lovers gather at Shinjuku Gyoen to enjoy picnics under the blossoms, waiting for the romantic moment when petals gently drift down. For those drawn to the breathtaking sight of cherry trees in full bloom, Kuno Shrine is not to be missed—you can take a cable car for an aerial view of the pink-hued landscape and even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji. Another must-visit hanami destination, Odawara Castle Ruins Park, is a hive of activity when its 350 Somei Yoshino trees are in bloom.

Japan’s northeastern region offers boundless natural beauty. Aizu Wakamatsu Castle, a filming location for the historical drama “Yae’s Cherry Blossoms,” becomes even more magical when its cherry blossoms are in full bloom. In Kitakata, over a thousand weeping cherry trees line a path approximately three kilometers long—the phrase “beauty in numbers” couldn’t be more fitting. Along both banks of the Kōzute River near the famous Tendō Onsen, a 1.4-kilometer stretch of weeping cherry trees creates a delightful setting where locals and visitors alike enjoy hot springs while admiring the night blooms in spring.

One of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots—Kitakata’s Kitakata Shōsha, alongside Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture and Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture, is known as one of the “Three Great Cherry Blossom Spots of Mutsu.” A must-visit destination for cherry blossom viewing, this 29,300-square-meter park is home to around 10,000 cherry trees. Stepping into the cherry grove feels like entering a dreamy pink wonderland.

Strategically located and blessed by the Seto Inland Sea’s mild climate, Shikoku is steeped in culture, blending history and art. Described as “a picturesque scene at every step,” the nickname is truly well-deserved.

Shikoku’s premier cherry blossom spot is Konpira Shrine, which boasts about 3,500 cherry trees. Many can be seen along the stone steps, and the area near the main gate (after climbing the 365 steps), known as Umebayashi, features blossoms lining both sides of the path—an absolute must for photos. Other hanami destinations on Shikoku include Marugame Castle, which has Japan’s tallest castle walls, Senbongata Park—one of the top 100 cherry blossom spots—and the renowned Ritsurin Garden, ensuring your trip captures the vibrant colors of spring with ease.
