In fact, the concept of “Love Knows No Borders, Hand in Hand with Siraya” originates from Technician Wada Yutaka’s selfless love for the Chianan Plain and the hand-holding culture of the Pingpu Siraya people. During his time in Taiwan, Technician Wada Yutaka was dedicated to constructing the Wushantou Reservoir, transforming the Chianan Plain from a wilderness into the nation’s largest rice granary. At the time, the Wushantou Reservoir was the largest dam in Southeast Asia and the third-largest in the world. To this day, the people of the Chianan region have never forgotten this great and selfless figure. Every year on May 8, a memorial service for Technician Wada Yutaka is held at the Wushantou Reservoir, where his borderless love has benefited many in Chianan. “Hand-holding” comes from the culture of the Pingpu Siraya people. In this matrilineal society, men expressed their affection by playing the harmonica, and when mutual feelings developed, women would hold the men’s hands. Marriage was referred to as “hand-holding,” and they practiced matrilocal marriage. After marriage, each partner would remove an upper canine tooth and entrust it to the other to keep, symbolizing lifelong togetherness. This event will select one Gold Award winner and two Honorable Mention winners. The Gold Award winner will receive a cash prize of NT$50,000, while each Honorable Mention winner will receive NT$10,000. From now until December 15, anyone who can visually convey the idea of “Love Knows No Borders, Hand in Hand with Siraya” can sign up to participate.
