First Impressions of Long Stay in Nagano (4): Karuizawa, a Favorite Retreat of Literary Figures::Japan::Kanto

Since 1886, when Canadian British missionary Shaw traveled to Karuizawa and was deeply captivated by its lush forests and cool, refreshing climate, he built the first villa here. Since then, celebrities from Japan and around the world have flocked to the area, making it one of the world’s most famous summer resorts. Located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, Karuizawa is a highland area rich in forest resources, with half of its area within a national park. When the maple leaves turn red, the entire region is enveloped in a vibrant crimson hue, offering a poetic and romantic atmosphere with every breath.

Karuizawa is home to many European-style churches, making it a popular wedding destination. Many bridal companies recommend or even highlight Karuizawa as the perfect place to tie the knot. In addition to vast woodland areas ideal for wedding photography, there is also the stunning “Stone Chapel.” Designed by an American architect, this chapel is primarily built with stone. Its sleek, curved exterior is embraced by surrounding trees, creating a warm and solemn atmosphere.

Among the architectural highlights of Karuizawa, “Hoshinoya,” which reopened in 2005 after renovation, is an eco-conscious hot spring resort. Architect Tokuko Hoshino skillfully presents “the scenery of Japan,” with 77 wooden villas scattered throughout the resort. Connecting the various buildings are narrow lanes that run alongside a gently flowing stream that weaves through the entire village. The villas, designed in harmony with the terrain, feature appearances reminiscent of traditional Japanese architecture while incorporating contemporary minimalist lines. The resort employs custom-designed candlelight and lighting, transforming the entire village into a starlit wonderland as night falls, offering a uniquely poetic ambiance.
