Breathtaking in the Sky: The International Hot Air Balloon Week Dazzles a Swiss Mountain Town

Château-d'Œx, known for its hot air balloons, is a stunning valley town (Pays d’Enhaut) tucked away in the mountains. At an elevation of 1,000 meters, its expanse of verdant grasslands makes it a paradise for a wide range of outdoor activities. Since the mid-20th century, Château-d'Œx has been a haven for hot air balloon enthusiasts. Since 1979, it has hosted an annual international hot air balloon competition. In 1999, Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard and British pilot Brian Jones launched their non-stop around-the-world hot air balloon flight from Château-d'Œx. Since then, the town’s annual Hot Air Balloon Week has attracted enthusiasts from around the globe.

The last week of January each year is when Château-d'Œx hosts its World Cup Hot Air Balloon Competition, featuring at least 80 balloons from over 15 countries competing in the skies. The array of colorful, uniquely shaped balloons is truly a sight to behold. The 2010 Swiss Château-d'Œx International Hot Air Balloon Week took place from January 23 to 31. During the event, visitors could watch the launch and landing performances of competing balloons, view special balloon airships, and experience thrilling long-distance hot air balloon races. For those who fell in love with a particular balloon, paid rides were available. Evening light and sound shows added to the festive atmosphere, ensuring a packed schedule of activities.

During the Hot Air Balloon Week, tens of thousands of visitors flock to Château-d'Œx, so it’s essential to book accommodation well in advance. There are around 20–30 lodging options in the area, ranging from farm stays to large hotels.
