Sun Moon Lake Celebrates 10 Years of Post-Earthquake Rebirth with Dazzling Lakefront Performances, Shows & Fireworks

It has been 10 years since Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area emerged from the 921 Earthquake. Starting January 22, a spectacular three-day program of performances, charity bazaars, and retrospective exhibitions will be held, adding to the charm of this “Pearl of a Lake.” On January 24, after the performances conclude, a fireworks show will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its rebirth, making for an especially lively celebration.

On the opening day, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, the “National Taiwan College of Performing Arts Affiliated Variety Troupe” will perform “Prosperity in the Year of the Tiger” at Zhongxing Parking Lot. On the evenings of January 23 and 24, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, the “Taiwan Youth Dance Company” will present the “Sun Moon Lake: Leaping 10 Years Creative Dance Drama Exhibition” at Zhongxing Parking Lot, drawing inspiration from the lake’s journey over the past decade. The performance will be followed by a 3-minute sponsored fireworks display. The Sun Moon Lake Volunteer Group, which has grown with the area for 10 years, will hold the “Dedicated to Sun Moon Lake: 10th Anniversary Charity Bazaar & Art DIY Experience” from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on January 23 outside the Shuishe Visitor Center, with proceeds going to charitable organizations. Additionally, the “Sun Moon Lake 10th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition” will be on display at the Shuishe Visitor Center from January 23 to March 31. The public is welcome to join in these activities.

The “National Taiwan College of Performing Arts Affiliated Variety Troupe” is currently Taiwan’s only professional acrobatics performance group. Their debut performance at Sun Moon Lake will showcase a dynamic program integrating acrobatics, martial arts, magic, dance, music, and more, promoting cultural appreciation and offering an entertaining educational experience. The “Taiwan Youth Dance Company’s” production “Ten Blossoming Years, A Radiant Pearl” is a dance piece specially created for the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration. Divided into five thematic sections—“Ten Blossoming Years,” “Dancing Shadows on the Water,” “Serene Beauty of Sun and Moon,” “Countryside Sentiments,” and “Happy Birthday”—the 90-minute performance vividly depicts the scenic area’s challenging journey of reconstruction, growth, and maturation over the past ten years, beginning with the 921 Earthquake, through the medium of dance.

In addition to the performances, to celebrate Sun Moon Lake’s 10th year of rebirth, the “Dedicated to Sun Moon Lake: 10th Anniversary Charity Bazaar & Art DIY Experience” has been jointly initiated by Sun Moon Lake volunteers. Many veteran volunteers who have spent a decade with the lake, along with staff from the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration, will contribute unused items from their homes for on-site charity sales, with all proceeds donated to the Nantou Family Service Center, bringing warmth to the area. The event will also feature limited free DIY experiences such as red tea leaf cards and indigenous handicrafts, offering fun for families and visitors on-site.

The Sun Moon Lake 10th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition at the Shuishe Visitor Center highlights the impressive achievements of a “Beautiful, Unique, Friendly, Quality, and Branded Sun Moon Lake” through four phases of development: “Post-Disaster Reconstruction,” “Renewed Classic Scenery,” “Deep-Rooted Growth,” and “Sustainable Management.” The exhibition also displays historical posters, publications, souvenirs, and vintage honeymoon photos, inviting visitors to take a moment to appreciate the transformations and stories behind the people, events, and elements that shape Sun Moon Lake’s attractive surface.

Furthermore, the first 30 teams selected for the “Soar Over Sun Moon Lake: Creative Costume Experience Cable Car Activity” will showcase their creative costumes at the Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station starting at 9:30 AM on January 23. In addition to receiving a free cable car ride, they may also win gift vouchers from The Lalu, Hotel The Wayside, and Grand Formosa Taroko.
