As spring approaches, it's once again cherry blossom season. In Japan, April marks the beginning of a new year, a time when many things are renewed. It is also when cherry blossoms begin to bloom or scatter like a shower. Therefore, most Japanese believe that braving the spring chill to go cherry blossom viewing and taking the time to refresh one’s life and mindset is the perfect way to welcome a beautiful new year.

In the past, Japan’s Meteorological Agency would release the “cherry blossom front,” which tracked the progression of blooms starting from Okinawa—the earliest region to see cherry blossoms—all the way north to Kiyotaki Temple in Nemuro, Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan. The entire blooming period lasts nearly four months. During this time, flower enthusiasts follow the “front” to chase the beauty of sakura. Beyond the Japanese fascination with cherry blossoms, this season also attracts millions of overseas tourists to Japan, including many annual “sakura” fans. So if you want to see the blossoms, be sure to book your tour, flight, or hotel room early to avoid missing out on this once-a-year spectacle.

This year, the Meteorological Agency will no longer issue cherry blossom forecasts. But for Taiwanese travelers hoping to witness the glorious bloom, you can refer tothe announcement from the Japan Meteorological Association.
