A Fragrant Carnival – The Menton Lemon Festival Has Arrived

While the carnival in Nice showcases the unrestrained spirit typical of southern France, the Lemon Festival in Menton also enchants with its golden temptations. Located on the border between France and Italy, Menton has recently risen to prominence thanks to its abundant production of plump, juicy yellow lemons and the vibrant, lively Lemon Festival (La Fête du citron à Menton). Various floats crafted from lemons fill the event with an intoxicating fragrance.

Menton, France, enjoys a mild and pleasant climate all year round, making it especially suitable for growing citrus fruits. Every year from February to March, during the lemon harvest season, the citrus-themed floats are not only bright and beautiful in color but also emit a delightful lemony aroma. The 2010 Menton Lemon Festival proudly celebrated its 77th edition. Each year, the festival adopts a different theme, often inspired by fairy tales and cartoon stories. The giant floats, animals, and cartoon characters—adorned with millions of lemons and oranges—are truly breathtaking.

Beyond being a long-standing carnival, the Lemon Festival is most importantly a celebration of the region’s abundant citrus harvest. This gives the event a unique sensory and visual appeal. Visitors can feast their eyes on the golden hues of the fruits and breathe in the fragrant citrus aromas. The highlight of the festivities is the “Golden Fruit Parade” held along the Promenade du Soleil. The parade features stunning floats decorated with lemons and citrus fruits, as well as a variety of costumed performances and acrobatic acts.

This year’s event runs from February 12 to March 3. Visitors are encouraged not only to admire the citrus and lemon-decorated creations but also to pick up some large, yellow lemons to pair with seafood from the Provence region. Enjoy a plate of crabs, shrimp, oysters, and juicy lemons—savoring the elegance and romance of French cuisine.
