Haguroyama Shokudo

The shokudo (vegetarian restaurant) is located on the Omotesando path next to the Three Deities Joint Worship Hall and has a history of over 300 years. In ancient times, it served as both lodging and a dining facility for pilgrims, known as the Haguroyama Shugyo-sho. The shokudo offers shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), with the “Imaboukan Basho Meal” being especially highly praised. This meal recreates the vegetarian food that Matsuo Basho, the haiku master of the Genroku period, enjoyed during his journey through Dewa Sanzan. Made with wild mountain vegetables, mushrooms, walnuts, chestnuts, young bamboo shoots from Mount Yudono, and handmade goma tofu, the Basho Meal is limited to 50 servings per day and must be reserved in advance. Don’t forget to call ahead if you want to experience it.
