Winter’s Red Sweet Storm is Here — and It’s Not Just in Dahua: 8 Strawberry-Picking Spots Across Northern, Central, and Southern Taiwan

The winter red sweet storm is here again every year from late November to December, a strawberry-picking craze sweeps across Taiwan. On weekends, the biggest strawberry-growing region in Taiwan — Dahua in Miaoli — is packed with fruit-pickers from all over the country. Sometimes, if you're a bit too slow, you’ll miss out on the big, beautiful strawberries, which is such a pity. In fact, aside from Dahua, there are many strawberry farms across northern, central, and southern Taiwan. So go ahead and plan your weekend trip now to jump on this sweet and sour red wave.

1. Taipei Neihu

You don’t have to travel far in northern Taiwan to pick strawberries. In Taipei’s Neihu district, there’s the Up Agriculture Farm on Bishan Road, which is also a key area for local leisure life. With beautiful mountain scenery, almost every farm here grows strawberries, available for picking from late November to May of the following year.

2. Miaoli Dahua

Miaoli Dahua is Taiwan’s most well-known strawberry-picking destination. Every December, the fresh and juicy strawberries gradually ripen, officially marking the start of the strawberry harvest season. This year, due to unstable weather, the strawberry harvest has been delayed by more than two weeks compared to previous years. Once the farms open, the Dahua Strawberry Season will continue until mid-May next year.

Dates: From now until the second weekend of May 2017 (Mother’s Day).
Farm Opening Hours: 9:00 AM until dark.
Ticket Price: No entrance fee, priced by weight (about NT$350–450 per catty), with prices expected to drop after the Lantern Festival.
Public Transport Options:
1. After arriving at Miaoli Railway Station, you can take a Hsinchu Bus bound for Dahua or Zhuolan — both routes are available. The drive from Miaoli City to Dahua Township takes about 40 minutes.
2. Take the high-speed rail to Miaoli HSR Station, then transfer to the High-Speed Rail Express 101B (Miaoli HSR Station → Xueshan National Park direction) to the terminal stop, Xueshan National Park Visitor Center, where several strawberry farms are located nearby.

3. Hsinchu Guanxi

When visiting Hsinchu, it’s not just about trying the famous pork balls and rice noodles — there are plenty of strawberry farms in Hsinchu’s Guanxi Township, which gradually open for fruit-picking in December. As the weather warms up, most strawberries ripen after Christmas. The big, bright red strawberries are super tempting.

4. Taichung Houli, Wuri, and Tanzi

The strawberry farms in the Taichung area are relatively scattered, but this also means you're less likely to encounter traffic jams or overwhelming crowds that could dampen your fruit-picking experience. Most major strawberry farms in Taichung have opened for picking by mid-December, with peak season lasting until around the end of March.

5. Yunlin Linnei

Linbei Village in Linnei Township is home to over 30 strawberry farms. Visiting Linnei on holidays for strawberry picking lets you avoid the crowds of Dahu and still enjoy quality parent-child time and fruit-picking fun with your kids.

6. Chiayi Dalin and Zhongpu

In Chiayi, the well-known tourist strawberry farms include the Dalin Berry Fragrance Sightseeing Strawberry Farm and Taiwan Zhenwu Strawberry Farm in Zhongpu. Aside from offering online home delivery, their onsite hand-picked strawberries are also plump and firm. Chiayi’s strawberry farms start operations gradually in December and produce fruit until about the end of March.

7. Nantou Guoxing

Many may not know that Nantou’s Guoxing Township is actually Taiwan’s second-largest strawberry-producing region. Due to the area's favorable climate, the strawberries grown here are large and richly aromatic. Many people even order them online specifically. Strawberries in this area typically ripen around mid-January and continue production through April or May, depending on the weather.

8. Tainan Shanhua

Although Tainan isn't known as a strawberry hub, there are still several strawberry farms in the Shanhua area where friends in southern Taiwan can enjoy the fruit-picking experience. Strawberries in the Shanhua area of Tainan typically ripen and become available around mid-November, though yields can be inconsistent in December. It's recommended to check strawberry conditions before visiting.
