Delicate pink cherry blossoms are putting on a vibrant show, but the upcoming “May Snow” is ready to take over the floral relay. In late April and May, pure white tung blossoms burst into bloom along Taiwan’s Northern Route 3 and in various mountain towns, creating a breathtaking spectacle of fluttering petals and colorful showers dancing through the hills. To help the public stay on top of the latest flower-viewing news, the Council for Hakka Affairs’ official “2010 Hakka Tung Blossom Festival” website has gone live, featuring thousands of tung blossom viewing resources for online searches. The site also includes “Flower Guardians” who regularly report the newest blooming updates.

The tung tree blossom is considered a guardian deity in Hakka villages. In earlier times, Hakka people collected tung tree nuts to supplement their income, using tung oil and wood for oiling paper umbrellas and crafting tools—it was a primary industry for the Hakka. Tung blossoms bloom every May, hence also called “May Blossoms.” Their pure white color has earned them the nickname “May Snow.” When in full bloom, the tung blossoms hanging from tree branches look like stars dotting the mountaintops; when mountain breezes blow, the white petals drift down like snowflakes, creating a shower of blossoms that resembles falling snow.

This year, the Council for Hakka Affairs has specially launched the “2010 Hakka Tung Blossom Festival” website, packed with rich tung blossom viewing information. It includes bloom updates, regularly refreshed event and gift promotions, musical and cultural performances, tung blossom souvenirs, recommended itineraries, travel highlights, tung blossom music, dances, literature, photography, and research—guaranteed to dazzle and immerse you in a digital snowflake wonderland. The “2010 Hakka Tung Blossom Festival” website has also enlisted 51 volunteers from 38 townships nationwide to serve as “Flower Guardians,” providing regular updates on the latest flowering conditions. This allows the public to fully enjoy the beauty of tung blossoms in real time while gaining a deeper understanding of Hakka culture.

This year’s Hakka Tung Blossom Festival centers around the theme “Tung Blossoms Dancing in the Spring Breeze, Music Resounding in Hakka Villages.” A total of 18 “Tung Blossom Symphony Lovers’ Dream” concerts, newly choreographed “Tung Blossom Dances,” and the “Tung Blossom Star Pop Music Competition” will be held, infusing fresh pop music elements. Hundreds of cultural and artistic events organized by local groups will let visitors experience the Hakka spirit through lively song and dance, stroll along blooming tung blossom trails, and sing and dance to Hakka folk melodies.

Flower enthusiasts shouldn’t forget to regularly visit the Council for Hakka Affairs’ “Tung Blossom Theme Website” to keep track of the latest bloom conditions, and head to Hakka villages to enjoy splendid art, authentic local cuisine, and nature’s colorful palette!
