Climb to the Zaian Viewpoint for panoramic views of Nanfang’ao and Guishan Island.

The stunning northeast coast can be considered the most remarkable shoreline in northern Taiwan, featuring a rugged mix of rocky and sandy shores, along with continuous mountain ranges. The entire Northeast Coast National Scenic Area stretches from Nanya in the north to Waiao in the south, covering a coastline of 66 kilometers. It is a national scenic area renowned for its mountain and sea scenery. The section extending from Waiao to Nanfang’ao is a quaint and laid-back fishing village. The coastline continues all the way to the Su-Hua Highway, offering breathtaking coastal views of eastern Taiwan.

Along the route from the northeast coast to Nanfang’ao, service stations and recreational areas have been gradually expanded. This year, the most anticipated “Zaian Viewpoint” has officially opened. From now on, you no longer need to rent a helicopter to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Nanfang’ao’s Neipi Beach. As the first high-elevation viewpoint along the entire Su-Hua Highway, it officially began serving the public in mid-March. This viewpoint was created by expanding and redesignating the former parking lot at the 108-kilometer mark of the Su-Hua Highway, following the extension of the jurisdiction of the Northeast Coast & Yilan Management Office. In addition to providing a parking and resting area for travelers between Hualien and Yilan, the viewpoint also offers a sweeping view of Yilan’s beautiful landscapes.

On the western side of the Zaian Viewpoint, you can gaze at the lush and majestic Tiger Head Mountain. To the north, there are breathtaking views of Neipi Beach and Tofu Cape. Originally an offshore island, Nanfang’ao became connected to the mainland due to sediment deposits accumulating along the coast to the south of the island, forming a tombolo. Viewed from the mountainside, the tombolo appears as a series of small hills lying across the sea, with elevations of less than 100 meters. The terrain features a distinct saddle, especially with three hills on the right resembling a penholder—hence locals call it “Penholder Mountain.” From the viewpoint, you can also look out toward Su’ao Harbor, making it a great spot for visitors to enjoy the sea and scenic vistas.

The newly opened Zaian Viewpoint not only offers sweeping views of Nanfang’ao’s beautiful mountains, waters, and landscapes, but on clear days, you can even see Guishan Island. While exploring the fishing village culture, cold springs, fishing harbors, and savoring fresh seafood along the east coast, be sure to visit the viewpoint for a high vantage point and take in the stunning beauty of the Pacific coastline.
