Nagasaki Omura Flower Festival: Enjoy the Splendor of Purple Iris

Fans of the mystery drama "Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning" are no strangers to the iris, as its striking purple hues frequently appear throughout the series. During the show’s spring episodes, the beautiful purple flowers can often be seen. The story even features scenes where the protagonist visits an iris garden during full bloom, creating a truly captivating atmosphere.

In fact, the flower known by the very Japanese name “hanashōbu” is what we commonly refer to as the “iris.” This year’s “Omura Flower Festival” in Omura City, Nagasaki, will take place from late March to mid-June. During this vibrant floral season, 2,000 cherry blossom trees, 10,000 azalea bushes, and 100,000 iris plants will bloom in succession. The festival period will also include a Cherry Blossom Festival and an Iris Festival.

Omura City is located in the central part of Nagasaki Prefecture and is a city in gradual development. To the east lies the Taramu Ridge Prefectural Park, while the west faces Omura Bay. The Omura Park, blanketed in blossoms, sits on the ruins of Kumashiro Castle and is also one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Aside from the Omura Flower Festival, Nagasaki Prefecture’s Shimabara City is also a must-visit destination, especially as it attracts 300,000 visitors each year to admire Shimabara Castle surrounded by a sea of flowers.

Built in 1618, Shimabara Castle in Nagasaki was constructed over seven years by the local lord, who utilized the small hills known as “Shihonzan” and “Moriyama” to shape the castle’s form—earning it the alternate name “Moriyama Castle.” After being home to lords of various clans for over 250 years, the castle was dismantled during the Meiji era, leaving only its stone walls. Thanks to extensive fundraising and restoration efforts by local residents, the castle has been returned to its former glory. Today, the moat of Shimabara Castle is particularly stunning in spring, adorned with vivid purple irises and cherry blossoms that beautifully complement the castle’s structure.

Even if you miss the brief two-week cherry blossom season in Japan, admiring the vibrant purple irises and azaleas offers a unique and equally enchanting experience.
