The Calla Lily Season at Zhushan Lake in Yangmingshan kicks off purely white on the 26th

Starting in March, it’s the season when the flowers of Yangmingshan bloom. In addition to mountain cherry blossoms, azaleas, and other floral displays, the seemingly secluded Zhushan Lake area is also covered with pure white and pristine calla lilies. This year’s Calla Lily Season kicks off on March 26. Thanks to the warm winter, the calla lilies have bloomed earlier, allowing visitors to see the white blooms swaying in the wind as soon as they head up the mountain.

Yangmingshan’s Zhushan Lake, with its cool climate, humid and rainy conditions, and fertile soil, has been successful in trial cultivation of various flowers, vegetables, and fruits. From Penglai rice to the first batch of transplanted tulips and high-altitude vegetables, all the way to the current calla lily fields, the area thrives and has become an excellent leisure destination for Taipei residents on weekends. The peak season for calla lilies is from March to May each year, with about dozens of farming households cultivating them on an area of 13 hectares. The “2010 Zhushan Lake Calla Lily Season” has specially invited 10 farming households to participate, using fresh flowers and calla lilies to create exotic-themed displays, making visitors feel as if they’ve traveled through 10 different countries after visiting the 10 family farms.

In addition to flower viewing activities, the “Spring Love” Calla Lily Photography Competition is also being held. The competition accepts entries featuring the natural ecological landscape, agricultural production, cultural scenes, pastoral views of Zhushan Lake, or any subjects related to the Calla Lily Season events. The first prize is NT$10,000, along with Calla Lily Season souvenirs. The submission period runs from April 16 to April 23. In spring, visiting Zhushan Lake not only allows you to enjoy the sea of calla lily fields across the mountains and valleys, but also the fun of admiring, picking, and buying flowers. A short drive up the road leads to Datun Mountain Natural Park, a great spot for outdoor excursions and getting close to nature. If you’re feeling energetic, you might also consider climbing to the main peak of Datun Mountain. With its prime location, reaching the summit offers a panoramic view of the greater Taipei basin and is an ideal spot for watching sunsets and golden hour light—the beautiful scenery is truly captivating.
