Listen to the soil sing—Yilan Green Expo opens on March 27

After the 2009 Yilan Green Expo, themed “Unlock Your Heart, Love the Earth,” which encouraged the public to reflect on nature, this year’s edition will be themed “A Beautiful New World,” guiding visitors into a brand-new way of life. The event runs from March 27 to May 9 in the Wulaokeng Scenic Area, where a massive garden maze will awaken the power of the earth. Lithuania’s MERENGO Dance Theater has also specially come to Taiwan to join the celebration, performing a magical adventure story through dance.

The 11th Yilan Green Expo is set to kick off with a bang on March 27 this year. This year’s major installation features a 4,100-times enlarged version of Picasso’s painting “The Dream,” expressed through green sculptures and floral walls, forming a gigantic 5,248-square-meter garden maze. In addition to enjoying the beautiful garden maze and appreciating the alternative form of a master’s artwork, visitors can gain an understanding of the need to cherish all things on earth and realize the power of human self-reflection.

This year’s cultural activities have specially invited Ocarina musician Ah Zhi, using his latest composition “Dream New Paradise” as the theme music, bringing a strong artistic and cultural atmosphere to the 2010 Yilan Green Expo from the very start. For schoolchildren, a series of exciting exhibitions have been planned: the “Shining Water Travel City,” which emphasizes the reuse of water resources, has invited experts to overcome all technical challenges to create Taiwan’s largest eco-crystal ball, weighing 1,000 kilograms, presenting a scene as dreamlike as a movie plot, promising to be spectacular. The “Forest Life Forest Farm” uses recycled old wood to build a vintage train, showcasing the evolving relationship between humans and forests, advocating for love of forests and the earth.

The expo features many themed pavilions. Food lovers interested in wellness cuisine should not miss the health and wellness education designed around the 24 solar terms, presented in the “Dandelion Leisure Living” exhibition area, which showcases a more refined and modern representation of Taiwan’s medicinal plants. Meanwhile, the garden design of this exhibition area is also planned according to international healing garden standards, incorporating green five-sense healing functions to provide ample rest for the body, mind, and spirit. The “Happy Bicycle Pavilion” is Taiwan’s first theme exhibition that travels through time to present the past and present of bicycles. Experts were commissioned at great expense to handcraft replicas of the world’s first bicycle, showcase premium million-dollar bikes, versatile bicycles, and a special Green Expo commemorative bike model, breaking previous exhibition records.
