Year-end travel to Hokkaido? Japan forecasts heavy snow one day before New Year's Eve

Hokkaido in Japan experienced a once-in-a-half-century blizzard during the Christmas holiday. Not only did Sapporo city accumulate up to 91 cm of snow, but over 6,000 travelers were stranded at New Chitose Airport until just two days ago when they finally managed to board their return flights. On the 27th, the Japan Meteorological Agency released its “Year-End and New Year Weather Forecast,” once again warning that there is a high likelihood of heavy snowfall in Hokkaido on the 29th, and travelers should pay close attention.

The Japan Meteorological Agency specifically pointed out that Hokkaido and the Sea of Japan side of Honshu may experience a period of heavy snowfall on the 29th, but the likelihood of heavy snow after the 30th is low, meaning minimal impact on those traveling home or going on holiday.

For travelers who have already planned to ring in the New Year in Japan and watch the sunrise, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast, from the Pacific side of Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, as well as from the Kanto region through to the Kyushu region, the weather will be clear and sunny—offering a high chance of seeing the first light of the new year. However, sunrise times vary by region, so those hoping to catch the sunrise are advised to check the exact time in advance.
