Visit Uonuma, step onto the epic stage of "Tenchijin"

The 2009 NHK taiga drama "Tenchijin" captured widespread attention for its setting — Uonuma. "Tenchijin" is the story of Naoe Kanetsugu, a brilliant and courageous warrior of Japan’s Sengoku period. Originally named Kagetsuna Kanetsugu and nicknamed Yoroku, Naoe Kanetsugu is a renowned historical figure in Japan, believed to have been born in Echigo Province (now Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture). Uesugi Kenshin and Naoe Kanetsugu were both born and raised in Minamiuonuma City, surrounded by lush green fields and offering expansive views and fresh air that take you far from the hustle and bustle of the world. These fields are also a key production area for Koshihikari, Japan’s most famous rice, making it a must-try local delicacy when visiting.

Located to the south of Uonuma, Joetsu City is home to Kasugayama Castle, the stronghold of the military god Uesugi Kenshin. Nearby stand large mountains with views of the Sea of Japan, creating a naturally majestic atmosphere. The ruins of Kasugayama Castle include the Naoe residence, where birds sing amidst forested hills — a place to connect with nature while also feeling the presence of culture. Another historic highlight of Joetsu City is Takada Castle, built by Matsudaira Tadateru, now part of what is known as Takada Castle Park. Especially during cherry blossom season, Takada Castle Park is one of the three best spots for night cherry blossom viewing. The lights emanating from the old castle cast a glow upon the blossoms’ beauty, painting the river surface with dazzling radiance.

Nagaoka City is home to the main castle and base of Naoe Kanetsugu, Yokoyama Castle. This city holds many remnants and memorials related to Naoe Kanetsugu. To learn about the great achievements of his life, a visit to the Yokoyama History and Folklore Museum is a must; the Kanetsugu statue erected there offers a 360-degree view over the entire city, as if his love and righteousness continue to resonate here. Other noteworthy sites include Tokugawa Family’s family temple, Tokusho-ji, as well as Zenrin-ji, which displays important cultural assets such as the armor and poetry often used by Uesugi Kenshin.
