Hokkaido Dream Job Adventure: 57-Year-Old Office Worker Chases His Dream

The “Hokkaido Summer Working Program” received applications over a three-week recruitment period, collecting a total of 262 résumés. The organizers have selected 10 finalists and specially flew to Taiwan for interviews. The applicants were all highly qualified, with no age or gender restrictions leading to a wide range of ages—from 17-year-old high school students to a 57-year-old—90% of whom were female. Their backgrounds were also diverse, including students, travel agency planners, and even lawyers and singers who applied.

To experience Hokkaido’s summer charm, even though this dream job is only a short-term position, some applicants flew back to Taiwan from places like the U.S. and Japan just to attend the interview. Candidates needed to have at least JLPT N2 Japanese proficiency, conversational English skills, and a personal blog suitable for promoting Hokkaido tourism and sharing their work experiences. In the initial document screening phase, aside from the required standard résumés, applicants’ creative self-presentations in various forms were also part of the evaluation criteria. Among the selected, one simulated a news segment, filming a video in the role of an anchor to share their personality traits and love for Hokkaido, while another creatively showcased their passion for photography, travel, and writing to meet the blogging requirement.

DIY: Picking a whole bag of lavender flowers

Winners of the “Hokkaido Summer Working Program” will serve as interpreters at the picturesque Furano and Biei stations in Hokkaido from June 15 to August 10. In less than 50 days, they can earn nearly 500,000 yen, enjoying the beauty of Hokkaido while working. The organizers plan to announce the final lucky workers who will get this dream opportunity on the Facebook fan page “REAL Hokkaido” in early May.
