Aomori:: Hachinohe Yatai Village Miroku Alley
Located in the center of Hachinohe City, the yatai village was renovated in 2006. “Yatai” refers to street food stalls, and Hachinohe Yatai Village is home to about 25 vendors. Starting from the entrance and walking along the narrow path, you’ll find bustling stalls on both sides serving everything from the local specialty Hachinohe ramen to Nanbu kakinoha sushi soup. There’s also oden, grilled skewers, sushi, and even cocktails — one after another, the wide variety is overwhelming. If you come later in the evening, you might even see some cheerful, tipsy patrons raising their glasses to invite you to join the fun!
We especially recommend a unique local dish you won’t easily find elsewhere — kakinoha soup. The term “kakuni” here refers to a type of senbei (Japanese rice cracker) from southern Japan: large, round, and thin. Normally eaten on its own, it’s crispy and hard, with a simple flour flavor, though you can also sprinkle it with sesame or mix in other ingredients. It’s usually enjoyed as a snack or light bite. But the creative people of Hachinohe came up with the idea of dipping the senbei into soup. The crackers used for this are typically harder, but once they soak up the rich broth, they soften slightly and develop a layered texture. This kakinoha soup is not only delicious but also packed with starch and umami from the broth, making it especially perfect for winter. Next time you’re in Hachinohe, be sure to give it a try — you won’t forget the taste!
