A summer journey to the rice fields: bring a stool and enjoy an open-air movie
Hotel installations have become increasingly diverse, with famous paintings, antiques, and luxurious furniture being common features. But The Lalu Resort, dedicated to promoting local culture, not only invites many celebrities and guests born in Yilan to share their life art, but has even brought rice paddies into the hotel premises. During the Spring Equinox this year, The Lalu planted 24,000 rice seedlings in the hotel’s landscape area, which were adopted and cared for by 300 of the resort’s staff. Now, an outdoor performance stage covered with rice plants serves as a venue for open-air movies, allowing guests to enjoy classic films while savoring traditional Yilan-style desserts.

The Lanyang Plain is famed for its endless green fields. In the past, farmers’ greatest leisure activity was sitting on a stool by the field to watch an open-air movie — a scene that feels poetic and picturesque even to modern-day people. This early summer, The Lalu launches a nostalgic journey by planting rice in the outdoor garden area. The green rice fields in early summer evoke a strong sense of rural childhood, filled with fresh and serene vibes. The Rice Country Cinema, themed “The Timeless Love Icons,” screens classic films starring renowned female stars such as Brigitte Lin, Ruan Lingyu, Bai Guang, Chang Mei-yao, and Wei Wei, transporting viewers back to the 1950s and 60s.
The Lalu’s “Early Summer, A Journey Together” event runs from May 1 to June 30. In addition to open-air movies, guests who book under this package will receive one specially crafted “Guardian of Happiness Amulet” per room as a travel souvenir. The hotel also hosts various DIY craft activities, allowing guests to immerse themselves in happy moments during the creative process and take home handmade mementos.

This year’s annual events at The Lalu all revolve around the theme of “Emotion for the Land.” In addition to growing rice on-site, the resort collaborates seasonally with writer Huang Chunming, food critic Han Lianglu, and painter Li Liang to organize a series of rice and farming-related experience activities. The hotel also displays information about the relationship between the 24 solar terms and crops, as well as knowledge about rice, in its lobby. In summer, writer Huang Chunming will guide The Lalu team in making scarecrows; during the autumn harvest, food critic Han Lianglu will share the history of rice cuisine; and in winter, the hotel will showcase rural-themed paintings by amateur artist Li Liang.
Yilan is known for its high-quality rice, especially the premium Ou Guang rice produced in Wujie Township, which has repeatedly won top awards. To experience the toil of farm work and the spirit of rural life, follow the growth of rice crops alongside writer Huang Chunming, food critic Han Lianglu, and painter Li Liang, and immerse yourself in Yilan’s rice country culture.
