Discover a Nostalgic Western Antique House in Kyoto ~ The 1928 Building::Kansai::Sanjo Street

Kyoto is a very walkable city, and that includes commercial areas like Sanjo Street. The Art Deco-style 1928 Building stands out with its light orange exterior, different from the typical red-brick or Tatsuno-style architecture often seen in nostalgic buildings. Constructed with reinforced concrete, its star-shaped windows and balcony on the top floor are inspired by the emblem of the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper (the Mainichi’s Kyoto branch was located here until 1998). Today, the building houses galleries, cafés, and performance halls.

The name “1928 Building” comes from the year it was built — Showa 3 (1928). Located on Sanjo Street, an area densely packed with nostalgic buildings, the 1928 Building (1928ビル) is situated near the eastern end of East Sanjo.
