The Tohoku region in northeastern Japan is ranked as the top hidden travel destination by Japanese office ladies. It boasts distinctly charming scenery throughout all four seasons: in early spring when temperatures are still cool, famous cherry blossoms and various flowers bloom everywhere; during the crisp autumn season, the riverside is graced with spectacular crimson maple leaves; in the harsh depths of winter, it becomes a prime spot for secluded hot spring retreats; and in the lesser-known early summer, it offers some of the most unforgettable views of traditional rural Japan.

Due to its latitude, subtropical regions have already entered the hot summer season by June, but in Japan’s northeast, around 40 degrees north latitude, it is the time when snow melts and new plant buds emerge. The landscape is a vibrant sea of fresh green, lush and full of life. In this enchanting season, we set off from Aomori Prefecture at the northernmost tip of Honshu on a 1,370-kilometer journey through hidden gems.

Our first stop is Oirase Gorge, which showcases the beauty of this season in full splendor. Located in Aomori Prefecture, Oirase Gorge is the only clear stream flowing out from the typical volcanic crater lake, Lake Towada. Stretching approximately 14 kilometers in length, the stream benefits from Lake Towada’s natural regulation of water flow, maintaining a stable and uniquely beautiful appearance year-round.
