Hokkaido’s Summer-Only Railway Trip: Ride the SL Hakodate Tankō

The SL Hakodate Tankō is a vintage steam train that offers stunning views of beautiful lakes, lush forests, rugged mountains, and the deep blue sea — and it only runs during specific summer periods each year. As all seats are reserved, it’s essential to book tickets early. Passengers holding a Japan Rail Pass or Hokkaido Rail Pass do not need to pay extra but must make a reservation at the ticket window in advance; otherwise, you’ll only be able to watch the train disappear into the distance.

The route of the SL Hakodate Tankō runs from Hakodate to Lake Onuma, then to Mori on the outbound journey, and returns directly from Mori to Hakodate. After departing from Hakodate Station, the train thunders along the coastal line through Hakodate’s Onuma Quasi-National Park, belching thick steam. Looking out the left window, passengers can admire the beautiful Lake Onuma and Komagatake Mountain. Once past the lake, the scenery on the right turns into a dazzling seascape. When the train arrives at Mori Station, it stops for about ten minutes, allowing passengers to disembark and take photos with the whistling locomotive.

Riding a vintage train wouldn’t be complete without a delicious train bento. The train sells various Hokkaido specialties such as Onuma Beer and squid rice bowls, as well as rich, aromatic coffee. At Lake Onuma Station, where the train makes a stop, you can try the local specialty “Onuma Dango,” available in two flavors: red bean with soy sauce and sesame with soy sauce. In Hakodate City, you can enjoy fresh squid dishes everywhere — crystal-clear, tender squid noodles and sweet, fresh squid sashimi. And the squid rice at Mori Station is just as good.
