Visit the City of Sunshine and Follow Momotarō to the Kibi Kingdom

Momotarō, carrying rice dumplings made by his grandmother and leading a white dog, a monkey, and a pheasant to attack the demons on Onigashima Island, is said to have traveled along the peaceful Kibiji Road. This 20-kilometer-long historical route stretches from the western suburbs of Okayama City to Soja, exuding a leisurely rural vibe and tracing back to the once-thriving Kibi Kingdom. The Kibitsu Shrine within the area preserves the grandeur of the Kibi Kingdom’s capital and its shrine. Its roof, built using the "hibi irimoya-zukuri" technique, stretches an impressive 400 meters, making it the most distinctive feature. Both the main hall and the front hall are designated as National Treasures by the Japanese government.

The mysterious-looking Onigashima (Demon Castle) is located atop a mountain near the outskirts of Okayama at an altitude of 400 meters. It is said to be the place where Momotarō defeated the demons. Although only the castle walls remain today, it still attracts many fairy tale enthusiasts. To learn more about the stories of Momotarō, Okayama City holds the "Momotarō Festival" three times a year: the Okayama Momotarō Festival in August, the Autumn Okayama Momotarō Festival, and the Momotarō Fantasy Light Festival in December. The August Momotarō Festival is Okayama’s biggest event, featuring energetic street dance performances and local folk art activities. Dance groups also paint their faces with demon-like designs, adding a fun touch to the festivities.
