Food is the most important part of travel. If you have a generous budget, why not treat yourself to a high-end kaiseki meal? If you’re on a tighter budget, then explore the markets to find affordable, everyday delights. Osaka, known as the “nation’s kitchen,” is the birthplace of many dishes. Affordable and hearty street foods like takoyaki, okonomiyaki, udon noodles, and kushikatsu warm the hearts (and taste buds) of all food lovers.

Osaka Kuromon Market

In the food-loving region of Osaka, it’s essential to dive into local life and see the delicious offerings at the markets firsthand. Starting from Shinsaibashi, passing through Dotonbori and heading south takes you to the bustling Namba shopping district. Just a short stroll from Namba leads you to the Nipponbashi area, where you’ll find the famous “Kuromon Market.” It’s the most authentic traditional market in Osaka’s downtown and has been operating since the Meiji era. By the Taisho period, it even rivaled the Osaka Central Market, the largest in western Japan. Kuromon Market has become a favorite among local residents in southern Osaka and is a top shopping destination for many long-established craftsmen in the Kansai region.

It’s no exaggeration to say that “Kuromon Market” is a treasure trove of ingredients for professional chefs. The market stretches 580 meters in length, with nearly 20,000 visitors daily. The main street runs parallel to X: Street and is covered with awnings, so you can shop with ease even on rainy days. Just one minute after entering from X: Street, you’ll hear the constant chatter of market vendors. From Japanese pickles and fresh produce to fruits and even takeout prepared dishes, you can find authentic flavors here. Even Japan’s famous fugu (pufferfish) cuisine, takoyaki, and udon noodles are all available to delight your palate at Kuromon Market.

The most famous fugu (pufferfish) cuisine — “Taisho”

Fugu is a beloved delicacy, and the most famous fugu restaurant “Taisho” is located in the Kuromon Market area. It has been in business for over 40 years. The owner carefully selects live fugu that is air-flown daily from fishing ports in Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki. Served with the old shop’s signature black vinegar, fugu hot pot and raw fugu sashimi best highlight their unique texture and flavor. With reasonable prices and richly tender meat, gourmets are willing to risk it all for a taste of fresh fugu.
