When you explore the global culinary map, Italian staples like pizza, risotto, and pasta are practically universal languages. In the realm of food culture, Italy holds a dominant and mainstream position. This mouthwatering empire of cuisine is supported not only by its rich ingredients and exceptional culinary skills but also by the captivating world of Italian wines. Founded in 1859, the Gaja winery is located in the village of Barbaresco in Italy’s northern Piedmont region. It has built a global reputation for producing top-tier wines and is regarded as a godfather-level estate in Italy. Under the leadership of family heir Angelo Gaja, the quality of its wines remains at the pinnacle of the market, just as their prices suggest. Every bottle of Gaja wine must undergo aging in small oak barrels before release — around 12 to 18 months for whites and 18 to 24 months for reds. This is both Gaja’s self-imposed standard and a guarantee of its exceptional quality.

Gaja is also known as the “King of Barbaresco.” The estate owns three of the most expensive vineyards in all of Italy, all located in Barbaresco: Sori Tildin, Sori’ San Lorenzo, and Costa Russi. These hillside plots represent the finest terroir in the Barbaresco region, producing scarce quantities of grapes. Each vintage consistently scores above 95 points, with bottles starting at tens of thousands of New Taiwan Dollars, making them highly sought-after treasures among global wine collectors. As one wine critic put it: “No matter how many Italian wines you’ve tried, if you haven’t tasted Gaja’s Barbaresco, you haven’t truly experienced Italian wine.”

In mid-June this year, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel Taipei hosted a special “Italian Wine King Gaja Dinner” at its Marco Polo Restaurant. The event featured four premium Gaja wines, including the outstanding 2005 Sori’ San Lorenzo and Barolo Sperss, paired with a luxurious five-course menu crafted by the hotel’s Italian chef Antonio Tardi. Dishes included tuna belly confit with orange glaze and top-grade Beluga caviar, steamed halibut with duck liver rolls and sweet wine sauce, and braised spice-infused suckling pig with zucchini flower. During the dinner, Gaia Gaja, eldest daughter of the Gaja family, will be present to share her world-class wine experiences and toast to fine dining.

The “Italian Wine King Gaja Dinner” will take place on June 14th at 7:00 PM. This exclusive event is only available for one night. The package includes the dinner and wine pairing at NT$18,000+10% per person.
